  • end of 2008

Have you noticed how ugly the main page of my blog is?! Terrible! I come here to catch up on people’s lives, so did not even bother to notice these painful colours that I selected for my page. Well, I just tried to change them. No more super bright orange and red!

The other night I was thinking that I haven’t written for a while and it is the end of the year so it is time to draw some conclusions. I went back to look at my resolution list that I posted at the end of last year and was pleased to see that it’s been a productive year.

    Resolutions for 2008

    1.              Find a new job and hopefully it will be HRM related job, so it can be a stepping stone to my HR career

I was lucky to find a HR job in Qantas airways, where I started in early March. I am still there and still happy. I love being a part of corporate HR, doing remuneration and recognition related things for Qantas employees.

    2.              Paint our apartment or at least some of it

Ha, well, we ended up selling that apartment and moving to another one, which we painted.

    3.              See my mom and friends wherever it might happen

In July we travelled to Europe for 2 weeks, during which time I managed to go to Latvia. It was great. I never laugh more and never feel as blessed and loved as I do when I go home. Of course there are down sides to every visit related to family drama and not very pleasant relatives. But it’s nothing comparing to how much joy I get out of it. Travelling around Europe with my mom was great too. I hope she can visit us in Australia next year.

    4.              Get back into healthy lifestyle? eating, exercising

In January I joined pilates studio down the road from where we lived and continued to go there until mid – October when we moved to another part of Sydney. It was a great challenge, but I loved every minute of it

    5.              Establish ourselves in the local community? finally make some close friends

Unfortunately this one did not really happen. It is sad to think that after being a part of a local community and church for 3 years we did not feel connected or settled at all, despite being heavily involved in things. We have now moved to another part of town and honestly, we can not find even one thing or one person that we miss. How weird! I find it really interesting how life surprises you with things like that. Hm.

    6.              Perhaps start grad school but it all depends if I will be able to enter into HRM related workforce

I got enrolled into Masters of Commerce at the University of Sydney. I decided not to start in semester 2, 2008 (July 2008) but start in semester 1, 2009 (March 2009). I can not say that I miss being a student. Having to work full time and study is not my dream situation, on the other hand, studying is always good, so on some deep level I am looking forward to this.

    7.              Be happier, more joyful and will laugh more than I did in last couple of years

Haha! Well, I feel happier and more content than I did before, so that’s a huge yes.

    8.              Enjoy fun activities with Dave instead of staring in our laptops day and night

We did stop staring at our laptops and been having some good times out together. It’s been a challenging year for the two of us with Dave travelling a lot and me being home alone a lot battling loneliness and feeling like a single person; issues in the church; misunderstandings and people not willing to work through them; close mildness and stubbornness of those around and just feeling sick of being a grown up when those around chose to act like children. It’s been a year full of lessons for the two of us. I can not say that I love lessons, I actually don’t. I like having a smooth life, but one can not grow if one does not go through lessons. So it’s been a year of growth.  The two of us are in the process of remission; I hope that 2009 will bring us to that good place again.

    9.                    Host some friends...don’t care where from, as long as they come and visit.
We did have some friends visiting, which has been great. Couple of friends already visited us in our new place. It’s been great, we love having people around.

In general it’s been a good and a busy. Me starting a new job and being accepted into grad school; Dave being very successful in what he does; us travelling to Europe and having an amazing experience there; selling and buying a place; personal challenges; community challenges; family challenges and of course all the new and exciting dreams that we have as a result of everything we experienced this year. I feel grateful for new and very unexpected friendships, and grateful for the old good friends, who’s friendship been a tremendous blessing this year.

    After few months of silence

I just realized that it’s been almost 5 months since I wrote here. Oh! Time does fly. I’ve been busy with a number of things, and honestly can not believe how fast 2008 is going by.

I started a new job in March. I now work for Qantas Airways as a business analyst in remuneration and recognition division which is a part of Qantas People group. I still think it is a miracle that I got this job and am grateful because I’ve been enjoying it a lot. My team and my boss are really nice and hard working people, and always seem to be happy to teach me different things, which is great as I am in a junior sort of role there.

Dave and I have taken time to evaluate our marriage and things that we want to improve, change, work on. It’s been a great journey so far and I am looking forward to the next few months. We will be celebrating 6th wedding anniversary later this year. Again, time does fly. I feel grateful for the time we had together and I hope our relationship will continue to grow.

We are off to Europe for couple of weeks at the end of June. Dave is going to a conference in Copenhagen. The plan is to spend couple of days in Copenhagen, then I will fly to Latvia for just 4 days (while Dave is attending the conference), then meet up in Vienna (my mom is going to come along), spend few days there, make our way to Prague, then Berlin and then fly home. It will be a very rushed trip, but it should be good. I am excited about my mom travelling with us.

I’ve been struggling with church, relationships and lack of challenges. I finally feel that I can not be blocking it anymore, but need to deal with it. We might be changing churches to find a more challenging place. Please pray that God would show His will. It will be hard to leave as we lead a home group and Dave does preaching few times a year. On the other hand we have to pay more attention to our Spiritual growth. I must say that both of us miss UPC a lot (despite the fact that we moved almost 3 years ago!) It was a great place to be a part of, if only we could move back

Dave is off to Papua New Guinea next week. It will be an interesting trip. He’ll be meeting with few government people regarding HIV in PNG and educating people about the disease, and establishing prevention strategies.

It's been getting cold so I decided to knitt myself a big scarf. I haven't done knitting for close to 10 years now and was very surprised I could still remember how to do it. Well, a week later and it is ready. Nice and warm

I will try to visit this site more often. It changes heaps! I do not enjoy the new set up as much, as I find it harder to read people’s blogs. I probably just need time to adjust

Christmas has come and gone. We didn feel like it was Christmas season at all and actually didn even decorate the place or put up Christmas tree. However, I noticed the rush in local stores which of course made me really annoyed. It always feels funny to hear really nice Christmas music and then face angry people that rush around mall trying to buy and grab things. I wish it was more peaceful and joyful.

We flew to Brisbane for a day to have Christmas dinner with Dave family. It was nice. We got to meet our niece who will be 10 months next month and we also found out that she will be a big sister next August. So family is well and growing.

It was quite cold surprisingly. It was supposed to rain in Sydney and it was dark and windy. I wore jeans and sweater, which is not normal for AUS Christmas. Even Brisbane, which normally gets really hot and humid was cool.

It is only couple of days left before 2008 kicks in. My family and I normally make new year resolutions and make plans. Hm, Ie been trying to think of my list, but somehow points on this list sound more serious and grownup like, which is kind of scary. Last year my goal was to finish uni and Ie done that.

Well, I hope that in 2008 I will

    -          Find a new job and hopefully it will be HRM related job, so it can be a stepping stone to my HR career

    -          Paint our apartment or at least some of it

    -          See my mom and friends wherever it might happen

    -          Get back into healthy lifestyle ?eating, exercising

    -          Establish ourselves in the local community ?finally make some close friends

    -          Perhaps start grad school but it all depends if I will be able to enter into HRM related workforce

    -          Be happier, more joyful and will laugh more than I did in last couple of years

    -          Enjoy fun activities with Dave instead of staring in our laptops day and night

    -          Host some friends...don care where from, as long as they come and visit

The list can go on but I guess these items are more important than others.

  • Thailand observations...finally

I finally get to share my observations about our trip to Thailand. When we first arrived to Bangkok I was quite impressed. Their airport is new and very modern and has this unusual design, which I really liked. We got into taxi and off we were into the city. I was amazed at how huge their highways are! In a way it reminded me Los Angeles (lots of light grey looking highways), but Bangkok has more and everywhere you look there are new highways being built.

By highways and under them there were lots of little houses, looking more like cardboard boxes than anything else, with people living in them. That was a little strange. I was surprised to see how polluted the place is and was glad our taxi windows were closed and was grateful for air-conditioning.

We got to the hotel and went off to discover the city. I was amazed to see hundreds and hundreds of stalls and people selling fake Ralph Lauren, Gucci and other brands. You can find anything there, movies, clothes, handbags, watch and everything fake, amazing! People could clearly tell that we are tourists (because we are Caucasian) and tried to sell us things every step we took! First it was sort of fun, but then it really got at me! Do I look like I want to buy tons of stuff? All I wanted was for people to leave me alone and let me look around and enjoy the city.

Bangkok was great at night, so lovely and busy and bright and loud. Of course they have different Buddhist worship things all over the city and it was strange to see people being so dedicated and worshiping different type of statues.

The following day we took a day long tour outside of Bangkok. We went South-East for about 2.5h and had an experience of floating markets, WWII sites close to Burma, Tiger Temple (which I learnt about on Discovery channel and really wanted to visit) and elephant riding which was an absolute blast! They turned out to be so big and cute and friendly!

We spent next couple of day discovering Bangkok, saw some temples, palace and just enjoyed the life of this busy city. A night before our departure I went to bed and Dave went outside to get me some tiger balm. He came back 10 mins later all shocked. I asked what happened and he said that 3 prostitutes tried to pick him up! So he ended up running from them! Bangkok is famous for that sort of stuff but we did not expect anything like that to happen to us.

After Bangkok we flue to Phuket. Many Australians go there for holidays, but half of our plane was full with Russian people. Wee heard so many good things about the place and were looking forward to spend a week there. When we arrived to our resort we realised it was fancier than we have expected. It was a part of a huge laguna resort village that had 5 different resorts and included golf courses, islands, beaches, restaurants, shopping etc. We got even a bigger shock when we saw our tandard room??it was a five storey villa that included a huge living room, balcony, kitchen, couple of bedrooms, a massive jacuzzi and on the top level an outdoor relaxation area overlooking the laguna. We had a bit of a shock!!! The staff around were so kind and attentive to us. They treated us like we were royalty, which we actually didn like, but we then realized that is one of the reasons why a lot of Western people go there ?they get treated like royalty for very little money.

The resort was like a paradise, such a beautiful place, which turned out to be very expensive too! I did not expect for a simple Thai dinner to cost $80 in a third world country (for the same meal in Australia we would pay around $20). Couple of days of observations and it became pretty clear that the whole show in owned by Westerns and is created for Westerns, but they use poor local people to serve us for nothing.

We went into the main village and just as we expected all houses were very ran down and looked awful among huge holiday resorts full of Aussies, British and American. Crazy! We were surrounded by locals once again trying to sell things. Finally we saw the reality of this place, which was very strange. It looked like the place had more or less recovered from a huge tsunami that took place two years ago. Even the beach and water looked clean again.

The beautiful beach actually looked a lot like Sydney beaches. The water was nice and bright and clean, a little warmer than Sydney ocean, but sand wasn as smooth as Sydney sand...in other word, I do like Sydney beaches better

We went on a tour to visit Phi Phi island and other islands around. I couldn get over the fact how beautiful the nature was. We were sad though to see that Thai people are definitely not practicing sustainable tourism! It all seemed to be about making money really quickly without thinking of consequences.

We went snorkelling and of course it could not be compared to the Great Barrier Reef, which we both really love. The variety of fish wasn that great, and there were too many tourists in the water trying to pick on coral which already looked pretty damaged. How sad!

In general we had a really amazing Asia experience, a different type of travel wee done before, which has definitely broadened our world view. We did feel uncomfortable with the fact that locals treated us like we were somebody fancy and royal or something. I felt sad to see how hard and how much locals have to work to earn so little. It was also our first experience of seeing Westerners taking advantage of a poor country, but from what I gather it seems to be a very common thing these days.

  • :)

We are back from Thailand. It been an interesting trip and I have a lot of thoughts and observations to write down. It definitely did not go the way I thought, BUT it was an amazing experience, quite an eye-opener too. Here is a link to some photos we took http://picasaweb.google.com/dmwilson/Thailand

Good news is that I finished uni! Yahoo! I checked my results and found out in Bangkok airport while waiting to catch a flight to Sydney. It was so exciting, but I think my mind is still catching up on the fact that it is all over. My graduation ceremony is not until the end of May 2008 (for some reason Australian universities hold graduation ceremonies 6 months after you officially finish). Of course they send you official letter and transcripts and all the other paper work right away, but if you want to participate in a ceremony you gotta wait. Anyways, we are having a celebration dinner with bunch of friends tomorrow night at one of my favourite Italian restaurants. It is a local place, and is really lovely and food is great too. I think tomorrow I will probably feel like it is all real.

Anyways, just wanted to drop a line and share some good news. Back to work full-time tomorrow morning, arghhh. Thankfully Christmas break is just around the corner!
